Program Philosophy

At Justin Siena, our volleyball program is built upon a strong foundation of core principles that guide our approach and team dynamics. We firmly believe in controlling the controllable's, emphasizing effort, attitude, and preparation.

With a focus on channeling energy and effort as crucial contributors to the team's success, our central goal revolves around developing each player, both on and off the court, within a positive and supportive environment that nurtures their full potential.

Trust, respect, communication, hard work, and dedication form the cornerstone of our team values.

Every athlete is encouraged to embrace personal goals, maintain a positive mindset, and believe in their abilities. Acknowledging strengths and areas for growth, they are driven to work hard and persevere in their journey.

While winning is important, we prioritize creating a positive and enjoyable environment where players can flourish and develop.

Trust and respect are essential for effective teamwork, and open communication facilitates seamless execution of plays and adjustments. We place great emphasis on hard work and dedication, and equally value the importance of having fun while experiencing the game and being part of a team.

Above all, our primary focus is on nurturing responsible community members, imparting values that extend beyond the volleyball court to excel in academics, teamwork, and life. We expect our players to embody traits such as effective communication, unwavering support, mutual respect, organizational skills, and unwavering commitment. Through dedication, discipline, and hard work, we strive to compete at the highest level each season.

At Justin Siena, we aim to create an enriching and empowering experience for all our players, equipping them with skills and values that extend well beyond the boundaries of the sport. Together, we forge a journey of growth, camaraderie, and collective success, with our shared dedication to becoming not only skilled athletes but also exceptional individuals in all aspects of life.

Meet the Coach

Justin-Siena High School is proud to announce the hiring of Joel Ilao as the Varsity Volleyball Head Coach at the school.  Coach Joel takes over the program from Gabrielle Cole, who served as Varsity Head Coach last season, leading the Braves to a Regular Season VVAL Championship and NCS Division 4 Championship game appearance.

Coach Joel coached in the program last year as a coach for the Freshman Team. He has also coached at the club level in the last few years, for both Club Solano and Enspire Volleyball Club.   After playing setter for his high school and university club level teams, Joel started coaching the sport (also at the university club level).  After time away from coaching, he was once again bitten by the coaching bug when his daughter (current JS sophomore Ava Ilao) started playing club volleyball.  He found himself coaching club volleyball soon thereafter, not only sharing his knowledge and experience, but also learning more about this ever evolving sport.

With a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science from De La Salle University in Manila, Joel is fascinated with data and he effectively integrates data analytics and metrics into his coaching philosophy.  He is motivated to incorporate skills, data, and a competitive mindset to all his players and help them reach their full potential.

About his new role, Coach Ilao said, “I am honored to take over such a prestigious program.  I am humbled to be surrounded by outstanding and seasoned coaches across the different sports programs.  I look forward to developing our student-athletes and continuing the program’s rich history of success.”

About the hiring, Athletic Director George Nessman added, “Coach Ilao has great enthusiasm for Justin-Siena Volleyball. His positive approach coupled with his experience as a coach and player will serve the program well.”
