2013: Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury
The 2013 “One School, One Book” selection is Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury. This book was selected by the student Literacy Club and the faculty and staff Summer Reading Committee for its startling relevance as Justin-Siena embarks on a 1:1 iPad Program and its potential to spark wonderment and discussion about our individual and collective values about the roles of ideas, books, learning, and technology in our lives.
Copies of
Fahrenheit 451 may be purchased at Copperfield’s, through our online book vendor ESCO, or through another vendor of your choice. Please purchase the paperback version of the novel (ISBN 9781451673319) so that the whole community is literally on the same page while we transition to wider use of digital books.
By orientation (August 15 for freshmen, August 16 for all other students), students should read all of Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury. Throughout the 2013-14 school year, teachers will incorporate the book into lessons, activities, and assignments in all classes. In August, students will interact with the book during orientation. They will also initially discuss the book and be assessed on basic understanding of the book and its themes through a project, test, paper, or some other format in at least one of their classes.
All parents, alumni, and coaches are invited to read the book as well. The opportunity to awaken our imaginations and enlarge our humanity is fulfilled when ALL of us together encourage students to read for pleasure and to engage in thoughtful discussion. In the beginning of the school year there will be opportunities for parents and other adults in the community to engage in conversation.
